How we calculate this score

Every regulation HIQA judged on an inspection earns points: Compliant 100, Substantially compliant 65, Not compliant 25.
Where the compliance plan rates the risk of a failing regulation, orange (moderate risk) takes off 15 more points and red (high risk) takes off 40. Yellow (low risk) takes off nothing.
An inspection's score is the average over the regulations it looked at.
A home's score combines its last 3 inspections: the newest counts for 50%, the one before for 30% and the one before that for 20%. With fewer inspections the weights are scaled up to 100%.
The trend compares the newest inspection's score with the average of the earlier ones: 5 points or more higher is improving, 5 or more lower is declining, anything else is stable.
Homes are ranked by score within their county and among scored homes within 25 km. Homes with the same score share a rank.

Method v1. It uses only HIQA's published judgments, not our opinion, and is recalculated whenever a new report is published.

What the latest inspection found

Cara Care Centre is a large, purpose-built nursing home with mostly single en-suite rooms and some double rooms. Residents generally felt content and praised the staff, though some noted occasional delays in assistance and staff turnover. The home is clean, with good infection control, and offers nutritious meals with choices. There are some concerns about unlocked sluice rooms, incomplete care plans for residents with challenging behaviours, and some maintenance issues like a missing door handle.

Long-term care
Dementia care

What inspectors liked

Most residents were content and praised the staff as great and rated the home highly.
The centre is clean with good infection prevention and control practices.
Meals are freshly prepared on-site, nutritious, and residents have choice at mealtimes.
Staff respect residents' privacy and dignity, knocking before entering rooms.
There is good access to medical and allied health professionals, including regular GP visits.

What needed to improve

Unlocked sluice rooms were found open during the day, posing safety risks.
Care plans for residents with responsive behaviours lacked detail and were not always followed.
Incident analysis had generic action plans that did not address specific issues.
Some maintenance issues such as a loose pest control light and a missing en-suite door handle.
Residents' personal records were stored in unlocked cupboards accessible to unauthorized persons.

What residents said

“The staff here are great, it's ten out of ten here”
“I'm so glad I'm here”
“At times, they were left waiting for staff to assist them”
“It's grand (about the food)”

Staffing: Staffing levels and skill mix were appropriate to meet residents' needs, with an increase in staff on the first floor noted as positive. The management team includes nurses and healthcare assistants supported by clinical nurse managers and a regional director.
Activities: There are facilities for social, recreational, and religious activities, including an activities room and a pleasant outdoor zen garden accessible to residents.
Food: Residents reported good choice and quality of food, with freshly prepared three-course meals served in dining rooms or bedrooms according to preference. Snacks and drinks were available throughout the day.
Dementia: Residents with responsive behaviours had care plans and staff had training, but care plans did not always guide practice effectively and were not consistently followed.
