How we calculate this score

Every regulation HIQA judged on an inspection earns points: Compliant 100, Substantially compliant 65, Not compliant 25.
Where the compliance plan rates the risk of a failing regulation, orange (moderate risk) takes off 15 more points and red (high risk) takes off 40. Yellow (low risk) takes off nothing.
An inspection's score is the average over the regulations it looked at.
A home's score combines its last 3 inspections: the newest counts for 50%, the one before for 30% and the one before that for 20%. With fewer inspections the weights are scaled up to 100%.
The trend compares the newest inspection's score with the average of the earlier ones: 5 points or more higher is improving, 5 or more lower is declining, anything else is stable.
Homes are ranked by score within their county and among scored homes within 25 km. Homes with the same score share a rank.

Method v1. It uses only HIQA's published judgments, not our opinion, and is recalculated whenever a new report is published.

What the latest inspection found

Dunmanway Community Hospital provides 24-hour nursing care for 22 residents, including long-term, respite, and palliative care. Residents praised the kindness and attentiveness of staff, but many were unhappy with the lack of social activities, describing days as monotonous. The building is clean and bright with ensuite rooms, but storage of equipment in corridors and some safety concerns were noted. Staffing levels were insufficient to provide adequate supervision and social engagement. Residents had good access to medical care, but choice at mealtimes was limited.

Long-term care
Respite
Palliative care
Convalescence

What inspectors liked

Staff are kind and attentive to residents' needs.
Residents have ensuite rooms with adequate personal storage and space to display personal items.
Residents have timely access to their General Practitioner and allied health professionals.
The centre is bright, clean, and provides a homely atmosphere in communal areas.
Complaints management has improved since the last inspection.

What needed to improve

Lack of social engagement and meaningful activities for residents, leading to boredom and isolation.
Staffing levels are insufficient to provide supervision and social activities, especially during the day and weekends.
Safety risks identified including blocked fire routes and unattended kitchen knives in visitor areas.
Residents are not consistently offered choice at mealtimes, with only one main meal option provided.
Inadequate storage leads to equipment cluttering corridors, impacting cleaning and safety.
Some residents requiring supervision were left unsupervised, putting their safety at risk.
Electronic door locks were disabled, increasing risk of residents leaving the centre unsafely.

What residents said

“Residents were very lucky to have such good care”
“There is a lack of things to do which makes the days spent in the centre monotonous”
“The social aspect of living in the centre was poor and it would be nice to have something socially planned throughout the day to look forward to”
“Find out whats for lunch when they get there”

Staffing: Staffing levels were not appropriate to meet residents' needs, with insufficient staff to provide social engagement or adequate supervision, especially in the day room. Weekend cleaning was also affected due to staff shortages, with night staff covering cleaning duties.
Activities: There was minimal social engagement and only one activity per day provided by an external agency. Residents reported boredom and lack of meaningful activities, especially for high dependency residents who spent much time in bed with little stimulation.
Food: Residents were not consistently offered choice at mealtimes; only one main meal option was provided at lunch. Some residents were unaware they could choose to eat in the dining room, and meals were mostly served in bedrooms.
